We use lenses of the highest optical quality and clarity. All of our lenses are lightweight polycarbonate with an anti-reflective coating, a UV 400 coating, and an anti-scratch coating. You will be able to see clearly and feel confident about the durability of your lenses and frames. All sunglasses have polarized lenses in addition to the features mentioned above.
We are not just stopping with glasses. We have a vision for the future to offer mass customization to everyone. We are the first company to leverage these new materials and 3D printing processes to custom-manufacture products that are as unique as you are.

Help us make this innovative new idea possible! We need funds for developing a web interface that makes the custom fit process even more streamlined and simple than it already is. In order for us to make this a viable process, we need to sell our products to customers in high volumes. By supporting us, you are becoming a part of this new movement of products made specifically for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a difference in quality between Protos frames and other frames that I can purchase online for $100?
There's fast food and then there's fine dining. Sometimes, you need a cheap meal on the go, and disposable $100 frames serve a similar purpose. Protos frames are impeccably designed and well-built. We use the most cutting edge 3D printed technology to provide you with absolutely gorgeous frames.
Will I be getting the same quality as I would get at an eyewear boutique or my doctor's office even though I'm paying half the price?
Yes. This is an exclusive offer for our crowdfunding campaign only. Rest assured, you're still getting a frame that is made here in the USA and a lens that is hand-mounted as well.
How does the custom fitting work?
Scroll up and watch our custom fit video.
In short, you take two picture with a credit card in it for scale. From there, our software algorithm can analyze your face and choose frames that fit your features and your lifestyle. We'll give you three potential options. You pick the frames you like and we'll deliver them to your door.
What happens if I'm not happy with the frames that I receive?
We will work with you to ensure that you are happy with the final product. We also offer a no questions asked return policy. In order for this return policy to be valid, you must return the product to us within two weeks.
Is there a warranty on your product?
There is a one-year limited warranty on all frames for manufacturers' defects
Can you do prescription SUNglasses?
We can only do non-prescription sunglasses. We have not perfected our algorithm to work with the base curvature of many of our sunglass designs when they have a prescription lens in them.
If I have an idea for a frame, can you make it for me?
If you have an idea for a frame, you can donate $4,999 to have the chance to collaborate with the Protos team and design a frame exactly the way you like it.
Otherwise, we do not offer a service that allows you to build your own frame. With over 24 different styles, we are confident that you'll love the frames that we currently offer. Through our custom-fit service, we can make adjustments to each frame so that it fits your face perfectly. This custom fitting is done based on what our algorithm says will fit you, and we give you three options to choose from.
We chose to do it this way because the difference between a very unattractive frame and a good-looking one for an individual is only a change of about 1-2 millimeters. Our custom fit service takes all the guess-work out of picking a good frame for you as an individual.
What happens if my doctor changes my prescription after I get my glasses?
We will offer you a one-time lens change for any prescription lens/frame that you purchase.
Do you have a return policy?
We offer a no questions asked return policy. In order for this return policy to be valid, you must return the product to us within two weeks. This policy becomes null and void after two weeks of ordering your product. You may still return your frames under the one year limited warranty if the frames have a manufacturer's defect.
Can you do progressive lenses?
Not yet. We have not perfected our algorithm to work with progressive lenses.
Can I use my phone to take the pictures for the custom fitting process?
Of course! If you have a smartphone like the iPhone, Android, or Galaxy, we should be able to use your pictures to custom fit your eyewear.
BUT! If your phone has both a front AND a rear facing camera (a camera on the back of the phone, and a camera on the screen side of the phone), be sure to use the camera on the back side of the phone. Rear facing cameras tend to take pictures at higher resolutions, and result in crisper pictures that will help ensure your eyewear fits better.
How durable are these frames?
The temples can be bent up to 180 degrees without snapping. We've spent hours perfecting our proprietary material. We use a high strength composite material that is extremely flexible and impact resistant. We've been wearing some of our older prototypes for over two years with only positive results. Unlike many other plastic, the material actually gets more flexible and malleable over time. We have a one year limited warranty on all frames for manufacturer's defects.
How good are these lenses?
The lenses are great. All lenses are a high grade polycarbonate material. They come with a UV-400 coating, a scratch resistant coating, and an anti-reflective coating. All sunglass lenses are polarized.
When does my card get charged?
Your payment doesn't go through until we've raised the full $25,000 within the allotted amount of time.
Will my insurance cover this?
Yes, if you need an itemized receipt we can send it to you. You can then submit it to your insurance provider. Please note: insurance usually covers about $50 for lenses and $50 for frames. This would not include Polarized non-Rx lenses.
How do I give you my prescription?
When checking out, fill it out in the 'additional information' field. You'll need to get your prescription info from your doctor. If you don't have your prescription ready right away, don't worry about it. Just say "will supply later" in the additional info field and we'll email you asking about it after the campaign is over.
How can I get in touch with someone on the Protos Eyewear team?
Can I put my FSANAH dollars towards this?
Yes. If you don't know what FSANAH stands for, then you probably don't have FSANAH dollars ;)
What colors do you offer your frames in?
At the moment, we only offer them in black. We hope to start selling frames in other colors in the near future, but that is not currently an option.
What is a stock fit frame?
Stock fit frames are pre-manufactured and ready to be worn. They are NOT customized to fit your individual metrics, but they are still 3D printed and they will fit many peoples' faces beautifully. Think of them as a one-size-fits-most pair of glasses.
Is there a cost for international shipping?
Yes. Please add an extra $50 for all shipments outside of the United States.
